Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The 4th Sunday of Easter is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday—for reasons that make perfect sense when you glance at the Gospel for today! Our readings give us the Lord’s reflection on his identity as the Good Shepherd of his flock. We’re continuing our reflection on the Apostles’ Creed this week by considering the difference that our belief in Jesus makes. He’s the one who guides and leads us! In more recent times, the church has also marked this Sunday as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Speaking from my own experience, I’d make two recommendations about how to promote this way of life that serves Christ’s flock. First, in prayer, ask the Lord to give the men he’s calling the graces needed to hear his calling and follow. It’s never been an easy path, and you’d be surprised by how many obstacles often come in the way of follow- ing this call. Second, when talking with the young men in your life, be sure to express the idea and im- portance of the priesthood every now and again. The shortage of priests isn’t from a lack of people that God is calling, but a lack of an ability to hear that call and a shortage of social resources that make following it a joy. Hearing from other people—parents, relatives, men- tors, and friends—that they’re supported makes it much easier to follow. Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, and our patron St. Thomas, may each of us be strengthened in our life’s vocation this week, and may our young people hear God’s call to the path he has chosen for them. Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: El cuarto domingo de Pascua se conoce tradicionalmente como el Domingo del Buen Pastor, ¡por razones que tienen mucho sentido cuando echas un vistazo al Evangelio de hoy! Nuestras lecturas nos dan una reflexión del Señor sobre su identidad como Buen Pastor de su rebaño. Continuamos con la reflexión sobre el Credo de los Apósto- les esta semana al considerar la diferencia que hace nuestra creencia en Jesús. ¡Él nos guía y nos conduce! En tiempos más recientes, la iglesia también ha marcado este domin- go como el Día Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones. Hablando des- de mi propia experiencia, doy dos recomendaciones sobre cómo pro- mover esta forma de vida que sirve al rebaño de Cristo. Primero, en oración, pídale al Señor que dé a los hombres llamados a esta voca- ción las gracias necesarias para escuchar y seguir. Nunca ha sido un camino fácil, y te sor prendería la cantidad de obstáculos que a menudo se interponen en el camino para seguir este llamado. Segundo, cuando hablen con los jóvenes en su vida, asegurémonos de expresar la idea y la importancia del sacerdocio de vez en cuando. La escasez de sacerdotes no es por falta de hombres llamados, sino por falta de capacidad para escuchar esa llamada y escasez de recursos sociales que hacen que seguirla sea una alegría. Recibir apoyo de otras personas (padres, familiares, mentores y amigos) hace que sea mucho más fácil de seguir. Por intercesión de María, la Madre de Dios, y de nuestro patrón Santo Tomás, que cada uno de nosotros sea fortalecido en la vocación de nuestra vida esta semana, y que nuestros jóvenes escuchen el llama- do de Dios al camino que Él ha elegido para ellos. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In the ancient church, the Easter season was considered a time of “mystagogy:” going deeper into the mysteries of our redemption. In those days, the catechumens heard the Creed and saw the celebration of the Eucharist for the first time after they were baptized at the Easter Vigil. Then everyone would reflect more deeply on those central truths of the faith in the weeks after Easter, seeing them anew through the eyes of the recently initiated. With that in mind, I’d like to mention a few things going on in the parish that can help us make this season a time of mystagogy for us, as well. First, for the next few weeks, I’m planning to preach on the basics of the Apostles’ Creed. I hope this will be helpful to anyone new to our parish, and maybe it will be a good refresher for all of us to look at the basics. If you’d like to go a bit deeper at home, I’m reading a book by Scott Hahn right now that you might enjoy called The Creed: Professing the Faith through the Ages. Second, we’re coming to the end of the Faith Formation year, which means that it is almost time to register for next year. For families with kids of the appropriate ages (kindergarten through 8th grade, plus high school Confirmation), please be on the look-out for early registration information. It will be held the first weekend of May, and we will also open online registration at the same time. Let’s make sure that the youngest members of our community have a chance to go deeper! Third, as you make your summer plans, be sure to circle the week of June 26–30, which will be our Vacation Bible School. We’re looking to make it open to more ages this year (more details soon!), but I’m very excited about it. This is always a great moment for people across our parish to come together and give our young people a great experience of God’s love. I look forward to seeing you there! Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: En la iglesia antigua, las semanas después de la Pascua (“el tiempo pascual”) era considerado un tiempo de “mistagogia”: profundizar en los misterios de nuestra redención. En aquellos días, los catecúmenos escucharon el Credo y vieron por primera vez la celebración de la Eu- caristía después de ser bautizados en la Vigilia Pascual. Entonces to- dos reflexionarían más profundamente sobre las verdades centrales de la fe en las semanas posteriores a la Pascua, viéndolas de nuevo a través de los ojos de los recién iniciados. Con eso en mente, me gustaría mencionar algunas cosas que suceden en la parroquia que también pueden ayudarnos a hacer de esta tem- porada un tiempo de mistagogía para nosotros. Primero, durante las próximas semanas, planeo predicar sobre los conceptos básicos del Credo de los Apóstoles. Espero que esto sea útil para cualquier perso- na nueva en nuestra parroquia, y tal vez sea un buen repaso para que todos nosotros veamos los conceptos básicos. Si deseas profundizar un poco más en casa, estoy leyendo un libro de Jorge Sáez Criado lla- mado El Credo: Comprende la fe que profesamos. Segundo, estamos llegando al final del año de formación en la fe, lo que significa que es casi el momento de registrarse para el próximo año. Para las familias con niños de edad de catequesis (de kindergar- ten a octavo grado, y la confirmación para los adolescentes en high school), estén atentos a la información de inscripción. Se llevará a cabo el primer fin de semana de mayo, y también abriremos el regis- tro en línea al mismo tiempo. ¡Asegurémonos de que los miembros más jóvenes de nuestra comunidad tengan la oportunidad de profun- dizar su fe!
